Puy-l'Evéque

Puy-l'Évêque is a medieval village perched on limestone cliffs overlooking the Lot valley, in the Lot department, within the Occitanie region of south-west France. Founded as a bastide town in the 13th century by the bishops of Cahors, it has retained a remarkable historic centre, with golden stone houses, narrow lanes and the Saint-Sauveur church. The village also sits at the heart of the Cahors AOC wine region, known for its robust malbec-based red wines, with several vineyards open to visitors nearby. The navigable River Lot allows for boat trips or traditional gabare cruises, recalling the village's former role as a river trading post. Puy-l'Évêque enjoys a mild climate for much of the year, well suited to outdoor pursuits such as walking, cycling and canoeing along the Lot. The surrounding area offers a number of notable attractions, including the village of Saint-Cirq-Lapopie and Bonaguil Castle, both within easy driving distance.
