Monteverdi Marittimo

Monteverdi Marittimo is a small hilltop village in the province of Pisa, Tuscany, located in the Val di Cecina area, close to the Metalliferous Hills and the Larderello geothermal district. Dominated by the remains of a medieval castle, the village retains a historic centre with narrow lanes typical of Tuscan hill towns. Surrounded by extensive oak and chestnut woodland, it serves as a good base for walking and nature spotting, notably towards the nearby Monterufoli-Caselli nature reserve. The area is known for its woodland produce, including chestnuts, mushrooms and truffles, which feature strongly in local cuisine. The mild Mediterranean climate, tempered by altitude, brings relatively cool summers and crisp winters. Nearby, the historic town of Volterra, renowned for its alabaster craftsmanship and Etruscan and medieval heritage, along with the distinctive geothermal landscapes of Larderello, round out a tourism offering centred on nature, history and traditional Tuscan rural life, well away from the busier tourist routes.
