Abetone

Abetone is a mountain resort in the Tuscan Apennines, on the border between Tuscany and Emilia-Romagna, within the province of Pistoia, sitting at around 1,388 metres above sea level. The Abetone Pass, crossed by a historic road commissioned by the Grand Dukes of Tuscany, gave the village its name and is surrounded by extensive fir, beech and chestnut forests. It is one of the oldest and most renowned winter sports resorts in the Apennines, with a ski area linked to neighbouring sectors such as Val di Luce and Monte Gomito, offering downhill skiing, cross-country skiing and snowboarding. In summer, the area is well suited to walking, mountain biking and visiting the Forest Botanical Garden, which showcases plant life typical of the Apennines. The climate is cool and damp, with snowy winters and mild summers, drawing visitors seeking fresh air and outdoor activities. The village retains a distinctly alpine character, with wooden chalets, sports shops and local cuisine based on forest produce such as mushrooms and chestnuts.
