Orange

Orange is a town in the Vaucluse département, in Provence, renowned for its exceptional Roman heritage. The ancient theatre, one of the best-preserved in the world, dominates the town centre with its still-intact monumental stage wall; it notably hosts the Chorégies, an internationally renowned summer opera festival. Nearby, the Roman Triumphal Arch also bears witness to the town's importance in antiquity, both sites listed as UNESCO World Heritage. The historic centre, with its shaded lanes, plane tree-lined squares and cafés, invites leisurely strolls, particularly around Place Clemenceau and the town hall. Orange also makes a convenient base for exploring the Côtes du Rhône vineyards, with Châteauneuf-du-Pape just a few kilometres away, as well as Mont Ventoux and the hilltop villages of the neighbouring Luberon. The Mediterranean climate, with hot, dry summers, makes outdoor activities enjoyable for much of the year. The Provençal market, local shops and southern atmosphere round off the appeal of this destination, which combines history, culture and the Provençal way of life.
