Mezos

Mezos is a village in the Landes department of south-west France, around 15 kilometres from the Atlantic coast and the beaches at Contis. It lies within the typical Landes forest landscape, a vast expanse of maritime pines well suited to walking and cycling, with a network of cycle paths linking neighbouring villages to the coastline. Mezos is close to Lake Léon, a popular spot for swimming, canoeing and fishing. The village is also associated with the local tradition of Landes stilt-walking, a legacy of the pastoral way of life once practised on the region's marshy plains. Several campsites nearby, some fairly large, cater to families with swimming pools and organised activities, making Mezos a convenient base for exploring the southern Landes. The village itself retains a rural feel, with local shops and a regular market. Regional cuisine centres on Landes produce, particularly duck, foie gras and maize. The area is generally quiet for much of the year, with a noticeable rise in activity during the summer holiday season.
