Porto Azzurro

Porto Azzurro is a coastal town on the island of Elba, in Tuscany, facing the Tyrrhenian Sea. This small port, formerly known as Porto Longone, retains a distinctly Mediterranean character, with colourful houses lining a seafront busy with fishing boats and pleasure craft. The Fort of San Giacomo, built by the Spanish in the 17th century overlooking the bay, remains the town's most recognisable landmark, though it now serves as a prison and is not open to visitors. The surrounding area offers several well-regarded beaches, including Barbarossa and Reale, along with coastal footpaths suited to walking. The Sanctuary of Madonna di Monserrato, tucked into the nearby hills, is a local spot for quiet walks and reflection. The town relies mainly on summer tourism and fishing, with a range of restaurants serving fresh seafood. The Mediterranean climate, clear waters ideal for diving and sailing, and easy access to other villages on Elba make Porto Azzurro a convenient base for exploring the island as a whole.
