Rio Marina

Rio Marina is a small harbour village on the north-eastern coast of the island of Elba, in Tuscany's province of Livorno. Its history is closely tied to iron mining, an industry that has left a visible mark on the landscape, with surrounding rocks displaying distinctive reddish hues caused by iron oxide. The small port, still used for fishing and pleasure boating, forms the heart of the village, framed by colourful houses arranged in an amphitheatre facing the sea. A minerals museum offers insight into this now-defunct mining tradition. The surrounding area features several beaches and coves reachable on foot or by car, valued for their clear waters and relative tranquillity compared to more touristy parts of the island. The town serves as a convenient base for exploring Elba's eastern coastline, including the nearby villages of Cavo and Porto Azzurro. The Mediterranean climate, with hot, dry summers, supports outdoor pursuits such as coastal hiking, diving and sailing. The atmosphere remains genuine, shaped by a local pace of life largely untouched by mass tourism.
