Almuñécar

Almuñécar is a coastal town in the province of Granada, on Spain's Costa Tropical in Andalusia. Its subtropical climate, among the mildest in continental Europe, supports the cultivation of exotic fruits such as mangoes, avocados and custard apples, typical crops of the area. The town has a rich historical background, having been founded by the Phoenicians and later occupied by the Romans, who left behind remains including an aqueduct and the ruins of the Factoría de Salazones fish-salting factory. The Castillo de San Miguel, of Phoenician origin and later rebuilt during the Moorish period, overlooks the old town and offers views across the bay. Almuñécar has several pebble and sandy beaches, including Playa San Cristóbal and Playa Puerta del Mar, lined with a lively seafront promenade. The Parque Botánico El Majuelo, near the castle, features a collection of tropical and subtropical plants. The old quarter, with its whitewashed lanes and local shops, contrasts with the more modern areas geared towards tourism. Local cuisine highlights fresh fish and seafood alongside the tropical fruit grown throughout the region.
