Lunel

Lunel is a town in the Hérault department, located between Montpellier and Nîmes, on the edge of the Camargue and close to the Étang de l'Or lagoon. Its old town retains medieval remains, including the so-called Tour des Bourguignons, reflecting a past in which the town was known as 'Little Jerusalem' due to its significant Talmudic school in the Middle Ages. Lunel lies at the heart of a well-regarded wine-growing area, home to Muscat de Lunel, a protected designation producing a naturally sweet wine typical of southern France. The region is also shaped by Camargue bull-rearing traditions, with cattle and horse farms nearby, along with summer ferias featuring Camargue-style bull runs and abrivados. The Mediterranean climate, hot and dry in summer and mild in winter, suits outdoor activities. Its proximity to Aigues-Mortes, Le Grau-du-Roi and the beaches of the Languedoc coast makes Lunel a convenient base for exploring Camargue heritage, vineyards and the seaside alike, while benefiting from a direct rail link between Montpellier and Nîmes.
