Longues-sur-Mer

Longues-sur-Mer is a small commune in Calvados, Normandy, best known for its Second World War German gun battery, one of the best-preserved sites along the D-Day coastline. Its four casemates, some still housing their original guns, stand on the clifftop and offer clear views over the English Channel, between Omaha Beach and Gold Beach. Freely accessible, the site is a popular stop along the D-Day beaches route, close to Arromanches-les-Bains and its museum dedicated to the Mulberry artificial harbour. The village itself retains a typically rural Norman character, with hedgerowed farmland, working farms and a parish church. The surrounding area offers coastal walking trails, including the GR223, which follows the cliffs and links to other historic sites. The oceanic climate, with mild summers and temperate winters, makes the area suitable for visits year-round, though spring and summer remain the busiest seasons, particularly around the 6 June commemorations. Longues-sur-Mer appeals to those interested in military history and to visitors seeking a quieter D-Day site away from the main landing beaches.
