Lesparre

Lesparre-Médoc, a sub-prefecture of the Gironde department, is the historic capital of the Médoc region, some fifty kilometres north-west of Bordeaux. The town retains the Tour de l'Honneur, a 14th-century medieval remnant of its former feudal castle. Its weekly market brings life to the town centre and reflects the character of this rural area surrounded by the renowned vineyards of the Médoc appellation. The town serves as a convenient base for exploring nearby wine estates as well as the wide Atlantic beaches of the Côte d'Argent, such as Soulac-sur-Mer or Montalivet, around thirty kilometres away. The maritime pine forests surrounding Lesparre offer cycling and walking trails, notably towards Lake Hourtin-Carcans. The nearby Gironde estuary adds a further maritime dimension to the landscape. Lesparre enjoys a mild oceanic climate, suitable for visits throughout the year. The town remains primarily an administrative and commercial hub for the Médoc, better suited to those seeking rural and wine-growing authenticity than a developed tourist offering.
