Les Vans

Les Vans is a village in the southern Ardèche region, on the edge of the Cévennes, set at the confluence of several rivers including the Chassezac. The area is characterised by wooded hills, dolomite rock formations and limestone gorges, making it well suited to outdoor pursuits. The Bois de Paiolive, an oak forest dotted with unusual rocky outcrops, is one of the notable natural sites close to the village. The Chassezac gorges, with their clear waters and steep rock faces, are particularly well suited to canyoning and hiking, two of the area's most popular activities. Numerous waymarked trails wind through the surrounding hills, taking in garrigue scrubland and Mediterranean woodland. The climate, Mediterranean in character with some mountain influence, brings hot, dry summers ideal for water sports and exploring the karst landscape. Les Vans also retains an old village centre typical of the Ardèche, with its narrow lanes and a lively weekly market. The village makes a pleasant base for discovering the wilder side of the southern Ardèche countryside.
