Porto Santo Stefano

Porto Santo Stefano is the main town on the Monte Argentario peninsula, in Tuscany's Grosseto province. This former fishing village, overlooked by a 17th-century Spanish fortress, retains a lively harbour where colourful fishing boats moor alongside yachts and ferries bound for the islands of Giglio and Giannutri. Narrow lanes climbing up from the port offer sea views over the Tyrrhenian and lead to panoramic spots such as the Torre dell'Orologio terrace. The surrounding coastline alternates rocky coves and small beaches, including Cala Grande and Cala del Gesso, both popular for diving and swimming in clear waters. Local cuisine highlights fresh fish, with a tuna-fishing tradition still reflected in some harbourside restaurants. The mild Mediterranean climate, pleasant for much of the year, supports a strong sailing culture, with several marinas nearby, including Cala Galera. Porto Santo Stefano therefore makes a convenient base for exploring the Maremma Regional Park and the islands of the Tuscan archipelago.
