Largentière

Largentière is a small town in southern Ardèche, the historic former capital of Bas-Vivarais, nestled in the Ligne river valley a few kilometres from Aubenas. Its name, derived from the French word for silver, recalls the silver-lead mining that brought prosperity to the town during the Middle Ages. The old centre retains cobbled lanes, limestone houses and a hilltop castle, once the fortified residence of the bishops of Viviers. Notable too is the Notre-Dame-des-Pommiers church, blending Romanesque and Gothic styles, alongside an old bridge spanning the river. Largentière makes a convenient base for exploring the Cévennes region of Ardèche, with its gorges, hilltop villages and hillside landscapes well suited to walking, canoeing and cycling. The Mediterranean climate, softened by the surrounding hills, brings warm, dry summers ideal for browsing local markets and sampling regional produce such as chestnuts and goat's cheese, alongside nearby vineyards. The area is valued for its rural authenticity and unspoilt natural setting.
