San Donato in Poggio

San Donato in Poggio is a fortified hilltop village within the municipality of Barberino Tavarnelle, in the province of Florence, right in the heart of Tuscany's Chianti region. The settlement retains its medieval walls along with two historic gateways, the Porta Senese and the Porta Fiorentina, reflecting its former role as a watch post along the route between Florence and Siena. Cobbled lanes lead to the Romanesque Church of San Donato and the Palazzo Pretorio, both fine examples of the area's local architecture. The surrounding countryside, typical of the Chianti Classico district, combines vineyards, olive groves and cypress-lined roads, making it well suited to walking or cycling between nearby wine estates. Thanks to its central location, the village makes a convenient base for visiting Florence, Siena and San Gimignano. The atmosphere remains quiet and rural, well away from the busier tourist centres, with a handful of trattorias and cellars offering classic Tuscan produce, including Chianti Classico wine and locally pressed olive oil.
