Bagnoregio

Bagnoregio is a town in the Lazio region, in the province of Viterbo, best known worldwide for its perched hamlet, Civita di Bagnoregio. Nicknamed 'the dying town' due to the ongoing erosion of the clay and tuff outcrop on which it stands, Civita can only be reached via a long pedestrian bridge connecting it to the modern town. The site, widely featured in travel media, draws many visitors each year keen to explore its cobbled lanes, medieval stone houses and sweeping views over the Calanchi valley. Bagnoregio itself retains a historic centre typical of central Italy, with churches and buildings dating back to the Middle Ages. The surrounding area, shaped by a Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers, is well suited to countryside walks through vineyards and olive groves. Local cuisine showcases classic Lazio produce, including olive oil, cured meats, cheeses and wines from the Viterbo area. The nearby Lake Bolsena and neighbouring villages such as Civitella d'Agliano offer further opportunities for day trips in an unspoilt rural setting.
