La Garde Freinet

La Garde Freinet is a Provençal village nestled in the heart of the Maures massif, in the Var hinterland, some twenty kilometres from the Gulf of Saint-Tropez. Long a Saracen stronghold, it later became a recognised centre for cork-stopper and chestnut-wood clog making, trades that have shaped the local identity. The ruins of the medieval fort, perched on a hill above the village, bear witness to this past and offer views over the surrounding valley and wooded hills. The village retains an authentic character, with narrow lanes, stone houses and a shaded square where a lively Provençal market takes place. Chestnuts remain an emblematic local product, particularly celebrated in autumn. The surrounding area is well suited to walking and mountain biking along the trails of the Maures massif, as well as to exploring the vineyards of the Côtes de Provence appellation. Its proximity to the Côte d'Azur means the beaches of Saint-Tropez and Cavalaire-sur-Mer are within easy reach, while still offering a quieter, more rural setting away from the coastal crowds.
