La Begude de Mazenc

La Bégude-de-Mazenc is a village in the Drôme Provençale area, a few kilometres from Montélimar and Dieulefit. It comprises two distinct parts: the old medieval village, perched on a hilltop and encircled by former ramparts, with narrow lanes, vaulted passageways and the remains of fortified gates; and the newer village, which grew up along the old royal road and is recognisable by its main street lined with 17th- and 18th-century arcaded houses. The area is known for its lime-blossom (tilleul) production, grown for generations and dried locally, as well as for its olive groves, lavender fields and vineyards, all typical of the Provençal Drôme landscape. The climate is Mediterranean with some mountain influence, bringing hot, dry summers and mild winters. The village makes a convenient base for exploring nearby towns such as Dieulefit, known for its pottery, and Grignan with its château. Walking, local markets and exploring the historic architecture are the main activities on offer to visitors.
