Rocca di Papa

Rocca di Papa is a town in the Alban Hills, within the Castelli Romani area, roughly 20 kilometres south-east of Rome, in the Lazio region. Built on the slopes of a volcanic hill, the town rises to over 700 metres, making it one of the highest settlements in the area, with narrow lanes, stepped streets and colourful houses typical of its historic centre. The area lies within the Castelli Romani Regional Park and sits at the foot of Monte Cavo, a well-known summit offering views over Lake Albano, Lake Nemi and the surrounding Roman countryside. The wider region is known for its vineyards and winemaking tradition, as well as for simple local cuisine based on regional produce and cold cuts. Rocca di Papa is close to Castel Gandolfo, the historic papal summer residence, and to other Castelli Romani towns such as Frascati and Nemi. Thanks to its altitude, the climate here is noticeably cooler than in Rome, making it a popular retreat from the summer heat while remaining within easy reach of the capital.
