Itri

Itri is a town in southern Lazio, in the province of Latina, set between the Aurunci Mountains and the Tyrrhenian coast, just a short drive from Gaeta, Sperlonga and Formia. The town is built around a medieval historic centre overlooked by the remains of Caetani Castle, which offers views across the surrounding valley. Itri lies along the route of the ancient Appian Way, with some paved sections still visible today, reflecting its historical role as a strategic crossing point between Rome and southern Italy. The area is well known for growing the itrana olive, a local variety used to produce a highly regarded olive oil, alongside other traditional agricultural produce from southern Lazio. The town's territory extends into the Aurunci Mountains Regional Nature Park, ideal for walking and exploring an unspoilt mountainous landscape with typical Mediterranean flora and fauna. The climate is Mediterranean, with hot, dry summers and mild winters, making the area suitable for visits throughout the year. Its proximity to the coast also allows visitors to combine exploration of local heritage with trips to the nearby beaches of the Lazio shoreline.
