Formia

Formia is a seaside town in southern Lazio, on the Tyrrhenian coast between Rome and Naples, nestled at the foot of the Aurunci Mountains. The town stretches along a broad gulf and offers several kilometres of fine sandy beaches, popular with Italian families during the summer months. The historic centre, built around the Mola and Castellone districts, retains Roman remains, including ancient baths and villa ruins, reflecting Formia's standing as a favoured retreat in Roman times. The seafront promenade, known as the Lungomare, is lined with shops, restaurants and cafés, and forms the town's main hub for strolling and dining. Local cuisine centres on fresh seafood, alongside regional specialities such as buffalo mozzarella and citrus fruit grown in the surrounding countryside. Formia also serves as a convenient departure point for ferries to the Pontine Islands, including Ponza and Ventotene. The mild Mediterranean climate, pleasant for much of the year, encourages outdoor living and leisurely pursuits typical of coastal towns in this part of Italy.
