Alcanar

Alcanar is a coastal town in southern Catalonia, in the province of Tarragona, within the Montsià district, close to the border with the Valencian Community. Its territory stretches between an agricultural hinterland planted with olive groves and a coastline centred on the maritime settlement of Les Cases d'Alcanar, traditionally linked to fishing, with its small harbour still in use today. The town enjoys a mild Mediterranean climate, well suited to seaside stays for much of the year, with sandy and pebble beaches valued for their relative tranquillity compared with busier resorts along the Catalan coast. The nearby Ebro Delta, just a few kilometres away, is a notable asset: this natural park features rice-paddy landscapes, rich birdlife and popular walking or cycling routes. The local economy remains rooted in agriculture, particularly olive growing and olive oil production, alongside residential tourism. Alcanar therefore makes a fairly quiet base from which to explore both the coastline and the hinterland of southern Catalonia, while staying close to neighbouring towns such as Vinaròs and Amposta.
