Figueres

Figueres is a town in the province of Girona, Catalonia, best known as the birthplace of Salvador Dalí. It is home to the Dalí Theatre-Museum, designed by the artist himself on the site of the former municipal theatre, which houses an extensive collection of his works and draws visitors from around the world each year. The historic centre, with its tree-lined Rambla filled with cafés and shops, is well suited to strolling. The town also preserves the Sant Ferran Castle, one of the largest fortifications in Europe, built in the 18th century, along with the Toy Museum and the Empordà Technical Museum. Figueres lies around twenty kilometres from the French border and close to the Costa Brava, making it a convenient base for exploring nearby towns such as Roses, Cadaqués and L'Escala. The region enjoys a Mediterranean climate, with hot, dry summers and mild winters. Local cuisine, rooted in Catalan tradition, showcases the produce of the Empordà, drawing on both coastal and inland ingredients.
