Guardamar del Segura

Guardamar del Segura is a coastal town in the province of Alicante, on the Costa Blanca, at the mouth of the River Segura. It is known for its long, fine sandy beaches, such as Playa Centro and Playa del Moncayo, backed by a belt of dunes stabilised in the early twentieth century through extensive pine and eucalyptus planting, now protected as a municipal nature park. Parque Reina Sofía, laid out within this wooded area, offers shaded paths close to the shoreline. The old town's archaeological remains, including the medieval castle destroyed by an eighteenth-century earthquake, and the excavations of the ancient Phoenician settlement of La Fonteta, point to a long history of habitation in the area. The mild Mediterranean climate encourages outdoor activities year-round and supports traditional market gardening, particularly palms and citrus fruit. Guardamar retains a quieter character than some other Costa Blanca resorts, while remaining well connected to Alicante and Torrevieja. Its marina and seafront promenade round out the appeal for visitors interested in nature and local heritage.
