Grignan

Grignan is a hilltop village in the Drôme Provençale area of south-eastern France, known for its Renaissance château overlooking the tiled rooftops and cobbled lanes of the town. The residence, once home to the Marquise de Sévigné whose letters helped bring fame to the village, is open to visitors and offers sweeping views over surrounding hills covered in vineyards and lavender fields. Listed among the Most Beautiful Villages of France, Grignan is best explored on foot, through vaulted passageways, stone stairways and shaded little squares. The collegiate church of Saint-Sauveur, adjoining the château, is also worth a visit. Each year, the village hosts literary gatherings inspired by Madame de Sévigné's epistolary legacy. The surrounding countryside, typical of Provence, is well suited to walking, browsing local markets and sampling regional produce such as olive oil, honey and Côtes du Rhône wines. The Mediterranean climate, warm and dry in summer, makes outdoor activities possible for much of the year. Grignan makes a pleasant base for exploring nearby villages and the wider Provençal landscape.
