Tropea

Tropea is a small town perched on a cliff along the Tyrrhenian coast of Calabria, at the heart of what is known as the Costa degli Dei. Its historic centre, with narrow lanes and stone façades, overlooks fine sandy beaches and remarkably clear turquoise waters. The Sanctuary of Santa Maria dell'Isola, built on a rocky outcrop connected to the beach, is the town's most distinctive landmark, drawing visitors for its sweeping views over the coastline. The surrounding area is well known for growing red onions, the cipolla rossa di Tropea, a local speciality used in both sweet and savoury dishes. The town also serves as a convenient base for exploring nearby coastal villages and, on clear days, the Aeolian Islands can be seen offshore. The Mediterranean climate, warm and dry in summer, brings large numbers of visitors between June and September. Outside the peak season, Tropea takes on a quieter character, offering a good opportunity to appreciate its architectural heritage and regional cuisine at a more relaxed pace.
