Misilmeri

Misilmeri is a town in the province of Palermo, Sicily, located around fifteen kilometres south-east of the Sicilian capital, in the agricultural plain known as the Conca d'Oro. Its name comes from the Arabic 'Manzil al-Emir', reflecting the town's origins during the Arab-Norman period. The Castle of Misilmeri, whose foundations date back to that era, still overlooks the historic centre and stands as a reminder of this medieval past. The town is also historically linked to the events leading up to the Sicilian Vespers uprising of 1282. Local livelihoods have traditionally relied on agriculture, particularly olive, citrus and vine cultivation, typical of the Palermo hinterland. The climate is Mediterranean, with hot, dry summers and mild winters, making it a suitable destination throughout the year. Misilmeri serves as a convenient base for exploring Palermo and the surrounding towns of the province, while offering a quieter, more rural setting than the nearby coastal city.
