Monreale

Monreale is a small town perched on the slopes of Monte Caputo, around ten kilometres from Palermo in Sicily. It is renowned worldwide for its Norman cathedral, the Duomo di Monreale, built in the late 12th century under King William II. The building houses one of the largest and best-preserved collections of Byzantine mosaics in the world, covering over 6,000 square metres and depicting biblical scenes against a golden background. The adjoining cloister, with its intricately carved twin columns, is another major point of interest. Since 2015, the cathedral has formed part of the UNESCO World Heritage listing for the Arab-Norman route of Palermo. The town itself offers sweeping views over the Conca d'Oro, the fertile plain surrounding Palermo planted with orange and lemon groves. The narrow streets of the historic centre are lined with craft shops, markets and small trattorias serving traditional Sicilian dishes. The Mediterranean climate, with hot, dry summers and mild winters, makes the town suitable for visits throughout the year, though spring and autumn remain the most pleasant seasons for exploring the surrounding area on foot.
