Selinunte

Selinunte, on Sicily's south-western coast in the province of Trapani, is renowned for its archaeological park, one of the largest in Europe. The site includes several monumental Doric temples, notably Temple E, which has been partially reconstructed, along with the acropolis overlooking the sea and the remains of two ancient harbours. Founded by Greek settlers in the 7th century BC, the city was later destroyed by the Carthaginians, leaving behind an exceptionally well-preserved set of ruins amid typical Mediterranean vegetation, including agave plants and wild olive trees. Exploring the park takes several hours, and having a car or using the shuttle service is helpful given the distances between the different zones. Nearby, Marinella di Selinunte beach offers sand and turquoise waters, popular for a swim after visiting the ruins. The surrounding area, between Castelvetrano and Mazara del Vallo, is known for its olive groves producing Nocellara del Belice oil and for simple Sicilian cuisine built around fresh fish and local produce. The Mediterranean climate, hot and dry in summer, makes early morning or late afternoon visits more comfortable.
