Porto Empedocle

Porto Empedocle is a small port town on the southern coast of Sicily, in the province of Agrigento, best known for its harbour, which serves as the main departure point for ferries to the Pelagie Islands, Lampedusa and Linosa. The town is closely linked to writer Andrea Camilleri, who used it as the inspiration for the fictional town of Vigàta in his Inspector Montalbano novels, drawing visitors keen to follow in the footsteps of the popular television series. Nearby, the hamlet of Kaos marks the birthplace of Nobel Prize-winning author Luigi Pirandello. Porto Empedocle lies just a short distance from Agrigento and its renowned Valley of the Temples, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, making it a convenient base for exploring the region's ancient Greek ruins. The seafront, small seafood restaurants and the atmosphere of a working Sicilian fishing port add further appeal. The Mediterranean climate, hot and dry in summer and mild in winter, makes the area suitable for year-round visits, with particularly high footfall in summer due to ferry departures to the islands.
