Ispica

Ispica is a small town in the province of Ragusa, in south-eastern Sicily, rebuilt in the Baroque style typical of the Val di Noto area following the 1693 earthquake. Its historic centre retains several buildings from that period, including Palazzo Bruno di Belmonte and the Santissima Annunziata church. Nearby lies the Cava d'Ispica, a long limestone canyon containing cave dwellings, necropolises and remains reflecting successive periods of occupation since antiquity, now accessible to visitors as an archaeological park. The coastal district, Ispica Marina, offers sandy beaches along the Mediterranean and becomes a busier holiday spot in summer. The area enjoys a Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and mild winters, making it suitable for visits throughout much of the year. Ispica lies just a short drive from other well-known Baroque towns such as Modica, Scicli and Noto, making it a convenient base for exploring this part of Sicily. The local economy remains tied to agriculture, particularly market gardening and citrus growing, alongside cultural and seaside tourism.
