Marzamemi

Marzamemi is a former fishing village on the south-eastern coast of Sicily, in the province of Syracuse, close to Noto and the Vendicari nature reserve. Its historic heart is arranged around Piazza Regina Margherita, lined with low, colourfully painted houses and overlooked by the old tonnara, a building once used for tuna fishing and processing that shaped much of local life for generations. The church dedicated to Madonna delle Grazie completes this compact village centre, easily explored on foot. Nearby beaches, such as those close to San Lorenzo, provide straightforward access to the Ionian Sea, with generally calm waters during the summer months. Local cuisine centres on seafood, particularly tuna prepared in various ways, along with bottarga. The Mediterranean climate brings hot, dry summers, ideal for long evenings spent at seafront tables, with the village at its liveliest between June and September. The proximity of Portopalo di Capo Passero and Noto, a Baroque town listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, makes it easy to extend day trips further afield.
