Acireale

Acireale is a Sicilian town on the Ionian coast, north of Catania, perched on a lava cliff overlooking the sea. It is known for its Baroque historic centre, rebuilt after the 1693 earthquake, featuring a cathedral and facades adorned with volcanic stone and wrought-iron balconies typical of Sicilian style. Piazza Duomo and the Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul are among the town's notable buildings. Acireale is also renowned for its carnival, one of the oldest and most elaborate in Sicily, famous for its flower-covered and allegorical floats. The town is home to thermal springs and a spa establishment that makes use of the local sulphurous waters. The surrounding area offers a contrast between volcanic cliffs and small fishing harbours such as Santa Maria La Scala, reached via a steep path. Local cuisine highlights citrus fruits, olive oil and Sicilian seafood specialities. The Mediterranean climate, hot and dry in summer and mild in winter, makes the town suitable for visits throughout the year, with Mount Etna visible in the background from several points around the town.
