Cargèse

Cargèse is a village on Corsica's west coast, set within the Gulf of Sagone, around thirty kilometres from Ajaccio. It is notable for its history linked to a Greek community that settled there in the seventeenth century, reflected in two churches facing one another on the hillside—one Latin Catholic, the other Greek Catholic. The village overlooks the sea, offering open views across the gulf. Several sandy beaches lie nearby, including Pero and Chiuni, both popular for swimming and water sports during the summer months. Cargèse also serves as a convenient base for visiting the Calanques de Piana, a UNESCO World Heritage site, as well as the Scandola nature reserve, reachable by boat from neighbouring harbours. The village retains an authentic feel, with narrow streets, local shops and restaurants serving traditional Corsican cuisine. The Mediterranean climate, with hot, dry summers and mild winters, draws most visitors between May and September. The surrounding landscape, characterised by maquis scrubland and rugged coastal terrain, is well suited to hiking and exploring secluded coves.
