Brassempouy

Brassempouy is a small village in the Landes department, located in the Chalosse area, just a few kilometres from Hagetmau. It owes its renown to the discovery, in the late 19th century, of the Lady of Brassempouy, a mammoth ivory statuette several millennia old, unearthed in the Grotte du Pape. This exceptional piece of prehistoric art is displayed at the village's Museum of Prehistory, which sets out the context of its discovery and the history of human settlement in the region during the Upper Palaeolithic period. The village itself retains a typically rural character of the inland Landes, with its stone houses set among gentle hills and farmland. The surrounding countryside, dotted with woodland and maize fields, is well suited to walking and exploring the local Chalosse heritage. Its proximity to Hagetmau provides access to further shops and services.
