Barbezieux

Barbezieux, officially Barbezieux-Saint-Hilaire, is a small town in the Charente department, located between Angoulême and Cognac at the heart of the region's vineyards. Perched on a hilltop overlooking the Trèfle valley, it retains a medieval castle, remodelled over the centuries and now home to the sub-prefecture, along with a Romanesque church. The town is well known for its local poultry breed, the Barbezieux chicken, a culinary speciality recognised throughout the region. Its historic centre, with narrow streets and old market halls, reflects a trading past linked to the cognac and brandy trade. The surrounding countryside, dotted with vineyards, woodland and small hamlets, is ideal for walking and discovering rural Charente heritage. Barbezieux makes a peaceful base for exploring the Cognac region, its distilleries and traditional villages, while enjoying a quiet, green setting. The mild oceanic climate of the Charente allows for pleasant stays throughout much of the year, well suited to outdoor activities and exploring local produce and traditions.
