Arzachena

Arzachena is a town in north-eastern Sardinia, in the historic Gallura region, just a short distance from the Costa Smeralda and Porto Cervo. The area is characterised by granite rock formations shaped by erosion, Mediterranean scrubland, and a mild climate with plenty of sunshine throughout much of the year. The town serves as a convenient base for reaching the beaches of Cannigione and Baia Sardinia, as well as the turquoise waters of the La Maddalena archipelago, accessible by boat. Nearby archaeological sites, including the Nuraghe Albucciu, the Li Muri necropolis and the Coddu Ecchju giants' tomb, point to human settlement dating back to the Bronze Age and earlier, making Arzachena of interest to those keen on ancient history. The surrounding hills are also known for producing Vermentino di Gallura, a DOCG white wine grown locally. The town centre itself is fairly modern and functions mainly as a logistical hub for exploring the north-eastern coastline, valued for its coves, clear waters and hilly hinterland, ideal for walking and discovering rural Sardinian heritage.
