Castelsardo

Castelsardo is a small coastal town in northern Sardinia, in the province of Sassari, perched on a rocky promontory overlooking the Gulf of Asinara. Its historic centre, with steep, narrow lanes, is dominated by the Castello dei Doria, a medieval fortress that now houses the Museum of Mediterranean Basket Weaving, a traditional craft still practised locally. The Cathedral of Sant'Antonio Abate, whose bell tower is visible from the sea, adds to the town's distinctive skyline. Nearby stands the Roccia dell'Elefante, a striking rock formation shaped by erosion and bearing traces of ancient rock-cut tombs. The surrounding coastline offers several beaches, including the area around Lu Bagnu, as well as quieter coves further along the shore. Fishing remains an important local activity, with lobster among the region's culinary specialities. Castelsardo also makes a convenient base for exploring northern Sardinia, within easy reach of Sassari, Porto Torres and the Anglona district, in a setting typical of the island's Mediterranean climate and coastal scenery.
