Carloforte

Carloforte is the only town on the island of San Pietro, off Sardinia's south-western coast, reached by ferry from Portovesme or Calasetta. Founded in the 18th century by Genoese families originally from Tabarka in Tunisia, the town retains a distinctly Ligurian character, evident in its pastel-coloured architecture, narrow lanes and the local Tabarchino dialect still spoken by residents. The harbour, lined with colourful houses and cafés, forms the hub of daily life. The local economy was long tied to bluefin tuna fishing, and this heritage is reflected in regional specialities such as bottarga, tinned tuna and locally grown capers. The coastline features coves and beaches including Spalmatore and La Caletta, along with steep cliffs that provide habitat for birdlife, notably Eleonora's falcon, which nests in the area. The island's largely undeveloped interior is well suited to walking and cycling. With its Mediterranean climate, sea breezes and an island atmosphere distinct from mainland Sardinia, Carloforte remains a popular choice for a relaxed coastal stay.
