Orgiva

Órgiva is a small town in the province of Granada, Andalusia, set in the Guadalfeo valley at the foot of the Sierra Nevada. It serves as the gateway to the Alpujarras region, well known for its white villages perched on the mountainside, such as Pampaneira, Bubión and Capileira. The historic centre of Órgiva retains a twin-towered baroque church, Nuestra Señora de la Expectación, which overlooks the main square. The town is particularly known for its lively Thursday market, which draws both locals and the long-established community of foreign residents living in the area. The surrounding countryside is dotted with citrus, olive and fig orchards, along with walking trails leading up towards the Sierra Nevada. The Mediterranean climate, warm in summer and mild in winter, makes outdoor activities possible throughout the year. Órgiva is often used as a base for exploring the traditional Alpujarran villages, recognised for their Berber-influenced architecture, textile crafts and mountain cuisine, including cured ham and other locally sourced dishes.
