Figueras

Figueres, a town in the province of Girona, Catalonia, is best known as the birthplace of Salvador Dalí. It is home to the Dalí Theatre-Museum, designed by the artist himself within the former municipal theatre, now one of Spain's most visited museums, drawing international visitors keen to explore its surrealist paintings, sculptures and installations. The historic centre, with its pedestrian Rambla lined with cafés and shops, is pleasant for a stroll, while the Sant Ferran Castle, one of the largest bastioned fortresses in Europe, offers insight into the region's military history and is partly open to visitors. Located around thirty kilometres from the French border and close to the Costa Brava, Figueres enjoys a pleasant Mediterranean climate, with hot, dry summers and mild winters. The town is often used as a base for exploring coastal villages such as Cadaqués and Roses, as well as the surrounding Empordà countryside, known for its gastronomy and wines. The high-speed rail station also makes it easy to reach Barcelona or the south of France.
