Plouguerneau

Plouguerneau is a coastal town in northern Finistère, Brittany, bordering the English Channel and known for its strong maritime heritage. The area is particularly noted for the Île Vierge lighthouse, regarded as the tallest stone-built lighthouse in Europe, reachable at low tide and open to visitors during the season. The town stretches along a jagged coastline, close to the Aber Wrac'h estuary, making it well suited to walking, cycling, sailing and sea kayaking. Vougot beach, supervised in summer, is popular for swimming and land sailing. Plouguerneau also retains a tradition linked to seaweed harvesting, a historic activity carried out by local seaweed-gathering families that shaped the area's economy, with traces of this heritage still visible along some coastal paths and information boards. The area forms part of protected natural spaces, home to varied coastal flora and fauna. The overall setting remains quiet and rural, combining dunes, rocky islets and small harbours, offering a fitting backdrop for nature-focused stays, coastal walking along the GR34 trail, and outdoor activities centred on the sea.
