Ovaro

Ovaro is a mountain municipality in the province of Udine, in the heart of Carnia, within the Friuli Venezia Giulia region. Nestled in the Degano valley, it comprises several small hamlets typical of this unspoilt Alpine area. The village is best known for its proximity to Monte Zoncolan, a landmark peak popular with skiers in winter and cyclists who come to tackle one of the toughest climbs in Italian cycling, regularly featured in the Giro d'Italia. The surrounding mountain landscape offers plenty of walking opportunities, with trails winding through forests and alpine pastures up to the nearby ridges. Carnia is also known for its craft traditions, particularly woodworking and local cheese-making, including the celebrated formaggio salato carnico. The typical Alpine climate brings cold, snowy winters well suited to winter sports, alongside mild, temperate summers ideal for hiking and outdoor holidays. Ovaro retains a rural, genuine character, away from heavy tourist crowds, making it a peaceful base for exploring the culture and scenery of this lesser-known corner of the Italian Alps.
