Gersau

Gersau is a picturesque village on the southern shore of Lake Lucerne, in the canton of Schwyz, nestled at the foot of the Rigi massif. Benefiting from an unusually mild microclimate for the area, the village has a long history of viticulture, with some traces of this tradition still visible today. Gersau holds a distinctive place in Swiss history, having been the smallest independent republic in the world until 1817—a heritage still reflected in its architecture, particularly around the village square and parish church. The lakeside setting is ideal for summer swimming and offers pleasant walking routes with open views towards the surrounding peaks, including the Rigi and Pilatus. The funicular railway and hiking trails leading up to Rigi Kulm make the village a convenient starting point for exploring the mountain. Gersau retains a quiet, residential character, well away from the bustle of the larger lakeside resorts nearby. Boat connections across Lake Lucerne provide easy access to towns such as Lucerne, Weggis and Brunnen, making Gersau a peaceful base from which to discover central Switzerland.
