Valli del Natisone

The Valli del Natisone are a hilly and mountainous area in Friuli Venezia Giulia, in the province of Udine, right on the border with Slovenia. The region takes its name from the Natisone river, known for its clear, turquoise-tinted waters, popular for swimming and riverside walks in summer. The area is home to a Slovene-speaking minority, whose influence can be seen in local traditions, place names and certain customs. Villages such as San Pietro al Natisone and San Leonardo retain a rural character, with stone houses and churches typical of the eastern Alpine foothills. The surroundings offer numerous hiking trails through woodland and hills, along with the Villanova caves, which are open to visitors. Nearby lies Cividale del Friuli, home to the well-known Devil's Bridge (Ponte del Diavolo) and a historic centre, serving as a natural gateway into the valleys.
