Piazzogna

Piazzogna is a small hamlet within the village of Gambarogno, in the Locarno district of Ticino, Switzerland, set on the western shore of Lake Maggiore. This lakeside location enjoys the mild climate typical of southern Ticino, supporting Mediterranean-style vegetation such as palm trees and camellias. The hamlet spreads across slopes rising towards Monte Gambarogno, a peak popular with hikers for its trails offering panoramic views over Lake Maggiore and the surrounding Alps. Neighbouring villages such as Vira, Magadino and San Nazzaro make up this wider Gambarogno area, known for its chestnut woods, small harbours and relaxed atmosphere, quite different from the busier tourist hubs of Locarno or Ascona nearby. The lake's proximity allows for swimming, sailing and fishing during the summer months, while cycling along the shoreline or boat trips to the nearby Brissago Islands are popular pastimes. Piazzogna therefore serves as a peaceful base for exploring lakeside Ticino, combining mountain and lake scenery within a setting that remains largely rural and unspoilt.
