Elm

Elm is a village in the canton of Glarus, tucked away at the head of the Sernf Valley in eastern Switzerland. It is particularly noted for the Martinsloch, a natural opening in the rock face of the Tschingelhoren mountain, through which sunlight passes twice a year, around 12-13 March and 6-8 October, briefly illuminating the village church tower — a phenomenon that draws visitors and photographers annually. Surrounded by the limestone peaks typical of the Glarus Alps, Elm provides an ideal base for summer hiking, with trails leading to surrounding alpine pastures and mountain passes. In winter, the resort offers a modest but family-friendly ski area, with alpine slopes and cross-country routes running through the valley. The village retains a preserved rural character, with a handful of traditional wooden guesthouses and chalets. Its secluded location makes it a peaceful destination, away from the bustle of Switzerland's larger resorts, valued for its authenticity and unspoilt natural surroundings.
