Innertkirchen

Innertkirchen is a small village in the Haslital valley, in the Bernese Oberland (canton of Bern), lying at the foot of the Grimsel and Susten mountain passes. It serves as a convenient starting point for reaching the high alpine valleys and the hydroelectric dams operated by Kraftwerke Oberhasli (KWO), which shape much of the surrounding landscape. Nearby stands the striking Gelmerbahn, one of Europe's steepest funiculars, leading up to Lake Gelmer, as well as the Aare Gorge (Aareschlucht), just a short distance away in neighbouring Meiringen. The area offers a classic alpine setting of forests, mountain pastures and peaks often exceeding 3,000 metres, making it well suited to hiking, mountain biking and winter sports in the nearby resorts. Innertkirchen remains a quiet, largely untouristy village compared to better-known destinations such as Grindelwald or Interlaken, yet it is ideally positioned for exploring the Grimselwelt region and some of Switzerland's most dramatic mountain roads. The climate is typical of a continental mountain region, with mild summers and snowy winters.
