Lugano

Lugano, in the canton of Ticino, is the main city of Italian-speaking Switzerland, set on the shores of Lake Lugano (also known as Ceresio) and framed by Monte Brè and Monte San Salvatore, both reachable by funicular. Its mild, near-Mediterranean microclimate allows palm trees to line the lakeside promenades and Parco Ciani, a spacious green area by the water. The old town, with its cobbled lanes and Italian-style façades, centres around Piazza della Riforma, the hub of local life. San Lorenzo Cathedral overlooks the city, while the church of Santa Maria degli Angioli houses frescoes by Bernardino Luini. Lugano is also a significant banking and financial centre, alongside a cultural hub anchored by LAC (Lugano Arte e Cultura), which hosts exhibitions and concerts. The lake is well suited to boat trips, notably to the picturesque village of Gandria. Its proximity to the Italian border shapes the local cuisine, blending Ticinese specialities such as risotto and polenta with cross-border influences. The city also serves as a convenient base for exploring the surrounding valleys and towns of Ticino.
