Interlaken

Interlaken is a small town in the canton of Bern, Switzerland, set between Lake Thun and Lake Brienz at the foot of the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau peaks. Its name, literally meaning "between the lakes", reflects this distinctive geographical position, which has made it a major tourist hub in the Bernese Oberland since the 19th century. The town serves as a gateway to the Jungfrau region, with mountain railways running up to the Jungfraujoch, as well as to the resorts of Grindelwald, Wengen and Mürren. The Höheweg promenade, lined with historic hotels and offering clear views of the surrounding peaks, forms the heart of the town. The Harder Kulm funicular leads up to a panoramic viewpoint overlooking both lakes. Interlaken is also well known as a centre for adventure sports, particularly paragliding, which is widely practised thanks to the surrounding terrain. The alpine climate brings distinct seasons, ideal for hiking in summer and skiing in the nearby resorts during winter.
